Planning Golden Hour Shoots by City

The best locations for golden hour photography vary dramatically by city — not just because of geography, but because of what the city has to offer: skylines, parks, bodies of water, mountain backdrops, and the specific direction the light falls.

Before you scout any location, calculate the golden hour time for that city and date. This tells you the exact window and, more importantly, the direction of the light. During morning golden hour, you want east-facing or south-facing subjects. During evening golden hour, west-facing subjects receive direct warm light.

New York City

Golden hour direction: Morning light comes from the northeast in summer, east in fall/winter. Evening light hits the Hudson River side of Manhattan.

Best spots:

Brooklyn Bridge. Shoot from Dumbo on the Brooklyn side for an evening shot with the bridge lit gold against the Manhattan skyline. The promenade puts you low and the bridge cables above create a natural frame. Morning shots from the Manhattan side looking east toward Brooklyn work well in fall and winter when the sun rises south enough to align with the bridge axis.

The High Line. The elevated park runs north-south with city views on both sides. During evening golden hour, the western side faces the Hudson River and New Jersey skyline. The light hits building facades along the Hudson at almost horizontal angles. The 30th Street section has open sightlines in both directions.

Central Park (the Reservoir). The Reservoir's northern path faces east and catches morning light directly. The tree lines and reflected sky on the water produce strong natural-light landscape images. Avoid midsummer mornings when sunrise is far enough north that the light misses the reservoir.

Gantry Plaza State Park (Queens). Less crowded than Brooklyn Bridge Park with arguably better Manhattan views. The light hits the Midtown skyline directly during evening golden hour from summer through fall. The cranes and industrial elements add compositional interest.

Los Angeles

LA's perpetually clear skies and hazy marine layer make for consistently strong golden hour conditions. The haze extends the warm tones and produces intense reds and oranges.

Griffith Observatory. The view west and south from the observatory provides a panoramic shot of LA with the Hollywood sign to the northwest. Evening golden hour lights the city directly. Arrive early — it's popular and parking fills up.

Venice Beach. The west-facing beach means the evening golden hour light comes directly offshore, hitting faces and figures from the front. Rent a bike and shoot the boardwalk during the 30 minutes before sunset.

*Malibu. East Beach and the Malibu Pier face west-southwest. During evening golden hour from May through September, the sun sets over the Pacific and the warm light reflects off the water. Waves and surfers silhouette well against this backdrop.

Los Angeles River (Elysian Valley). Less known but striking — the concrete channel and industrial surroundings look cinematic in warm golden light. The river runs roughly north-south, so east-facing channel walls light up during morning golden hour.

Miami

Miami's low latitude (25°N) means a shorter golden hour — typically 30–40 minutes — but the quality can be exceptional. The combination of tropical atmosphere, water everywhere, and Art Deco architecture is hard to beat.

South Beach Ocean Drive. The famous Art Deco strip faces east, so morning golden hour is when these buildings light up directly. Evening has the light behind the buildings, which means silhouette opportunities but less color on the facades.

Wynwood Walls. Morning golden hour hits the murals on east-facing walls directly. The narrow streets create natural directional light that's more flattering on the detailed street art than flat midday light.

Brickell Key. This small island in Biscayne Bay has 360° water views with the downtown Miami skyline to the west. Evening golden hour shots from Brickell Key looking west give you the city plus water plus warm light simultaneously.

Seattle

Seattle's reputation for overcast skies is somewhat deserved, but clear days are common from June through September, and the long summer golden hour at 47°N latitude is exceptional — often running 80–100 minutes.

Kerry Park. The classic Seattle shot: downtown skyline, Space Needle, Mount Rainier in the background (when visible). Faces west-northwest. Evening golden hour from late spring through early fall is when Rainier is most likely to be visible and the sun is in the right position to light the skyline from the west.

Gas Works Park. North-facing views across Lake Union toward Queen Anne Hill. The industrial ruins of the gasification plant make distinctive foreground elements. Morning golden hour in summer puts the sun to the southeast, lighting the ruins from an angle.

Alki Beach. West-facing across Puget Sound with the Olympics in the background. Evening golden hour in summer lights the mountains from the east — you shoot toward the sun setting over the Olympics.

Denver and Colorado

The combination of altitude, clear skies, and mountain backdrops makes Colorado one of the best states in the US for golden hour photography.

City Park with Fountain. The fountain faces south with the Denver skyline in the background. Morning golden hour in summer lights the skyline from the northeast. The fountain foreground with city background is a classic composition.

Red Rocks. The sandstone formations face east and catch morning golden hour light directly. The reds and oranges of the rock intensify in warm light. Summer mornings at Red Rocks before the crowds arrive produce striking landscape images.

Maroon Bells (Aspen). This is one of the most photographed landscapes in Colorado — two 14,000-foot peaks reflected in Maroon Lake. The mountains face east. Morning golden hour from the lake shoreline is the shot. Arrive before sunrise, which the calculator shows may be as early as 5:20 AM in late June at Denver's latitude.

Chicago

Chicago's grid aligns almost exactly with the cardinal directions. This means east-west streets have perfect views of the sunrise and sunset, and specific canyon-like corridors channel morning and evening light spectacularly.

*Buckingham Fountain. Faces south in Grant Park with the skyline behind it. Morning golden hour in fall and winter puts the sun to the southeast, lighting the fountain from the front with the skyline in the background.

The Riverwalk. The Chicago River runs east-west through downtown. Morning golden hour light travels west along the river corridor, lighting both canyon walls of skyscrapers. Shoot east toward the rising sun with the river as your leading line.

The 606 Trail. Elevated trail on Chicago's northwest side with city views. The east-facing edge gets morning golden hour light directly. Residential architecture, water towers, and city skyline combine in an urban landscape composition that avoids the standard tourist shots.

Using the Calculator for Location Scouting

The direction information you get from calculating your golden hour is more than just time — it tells you which angle the light is coming from. This determines which side of any subject will be lit or in shadow.

A general rule: for east-facing subjects, morning golden hour is the main event. For west-facing subjects, shoot during evening golden hour. For south-facing subjects, the light grazes from the side during both windows, which creates strong shadow detail.

Scout locations during midday to understand the geometry — note which direction buildings, mountains, or water faces, then map it to your planned golden hour window.
